World Bee Day 2025
Bees and other pollinators, such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds, are increasingly threatened by human activities.
Pollination is, however, a fundamental process for the survival of our ecosystems. Nearly 90% of the world's wild flowering plant species depend, entirely or at least in part, on animal pollination, along with over 75% of the world's food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. Pollinators not only contribute directly to food security, but are also essential for the conservation of biodiversity.

To raise public awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN has designated May 20 as World Bee Day.
The aim is to strengthen measures to protect bees and other pollinators, which would significantly contribute to solving global food supply problems and eliminating hunger in developing countries.
In this context for at least two decades, ISPRA has been involved in initiatives and projects to monitor the environment and pollinator populations, including honeybees. Currently, among the ongoing projects we remember: “Apincittà”, a survey to monitor bees and flora of beekeeping interest, in collaboration with CUFAA, the Carabinieri Forestry, Environmental and Agri-food Unit Command and the VeBS project on the good use of green and blue spaces for the promotion of health and well-being, also through the protection of ecosystem services, such as pollination performed by Apoidea.
