Preview at Flowpath 2025: the new Hydrogeological Map of Italy at 1:500,000 scale

ISPRA will present the new Hydrogeological Map of Italy (CII500K), the cartography that maps the country's groundwater, during the scientific conference Flowpath 2025, scheduled in Turin from 11 to 13 June. This is an important milestone for the knowledge, management and protection of groundwater at a national level. The CII500K was born from an intense collaboration between ISPRA and the University of Milan - Department of Earth Sciences "Ardito Desio", as part of a research agreement aimed at systematizing and harmonizing regional hydrogeological knowledge on a national scale, and was also achieved thanks to both the scientific and economic contribution of the CARG Project.

Numerous bodies and institutions have contributed to the development of the map, including ISTAT, for data on captured sources, and the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), for the analysis of historical, current and forecast climate data. The contribution of the SNPA System, the District Basin Authorities, the Regions and experts from various professional and scientific fields was also fundamental, making the CII500K the first Italian example of true "participatory cartography" in the hydrogeological sector.

The CII500K represents today the national reference for hydrogeological knowledge, integrating, updating and homogenizing existing data and information. The map will be an essential support for general planning activities, sustainable management and knowledge of national underground water resources, also in the context of climate change adaptation strategies.

Furthermore, the CII500K is conceived as a dynamic tool, which will be subject to periodic updates to ensure the constant topicality and usefulness of the data, for the benefit of the technical-scientific community, management bodies and national environmental policies.
